There are several reasons that one might think about hormone detox. Certainly for me right now coming off over a year of hormones and fertility meds, it’s a must. But women may also want to consider it if they have imbalances such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), premenstrual syndrome (PMS), estrogen dominance, perimenopause or menopause. Oh yeah and then there’s postpartum hormone rebalancing too. Just a short list of possibilities! Following are some of the key things that I would look at when trying to detoxify hormones.
I’ve been sharing along the way our journey to try to grow our family, through acupuncture, natural treatments, energy work, hormone therapy, IUI and IVF. Well this week, we have come to the end of the road, and as our fertility journey comes to an end, I am working on acceptance, gratitude and peace for the ways things are. And a life of travel and ponies.
As I walked back into my office yesterday after lunch, I was overwhelmed by the most horrible smell. It smelled like some chemical bomb had gone off in the building. As it turns out, there is a new nail salon going in downstairs, and they were redoing the floors. Sadly for the rest of us, we were swimming in chemicals and toxins, to the point where our eyes were burning, we were nauseous, and a couple of ladies actually got sick in the ladies room. I am not pregnant, but I am mid-IVF cycle, and the last thing I want to expose all these little growing Nemo-like eggs to is such profoundly toxic chemicals. I hightailed it out of there! It did get me thinking about toxic exposure in preconception and pregnancy, and just how important minimizing toxic exposures are, and I remembered a good resource for toxicity and pregnancy information that I wanted to make sure you knew about. Acupuncture has long been used to help women enhance their fertility and reproductive health. It will come as no surprise to acupuncturists who have seen the positive results, nor to the couples who have been able to conceive, helped by their acupuncture treatments. However, conventional and allopathic medical communities have sometimes been skeptical. A recent study in the UK has validated the positive benefits, as was published recently in The Times newspaper, making converts out of some of the biggest skeptics! It showed that indeed, acupuncture boosts success rates of IVF.
Happy Fertile Friday everyone! In those early days, weeks and even months of nursing, keeping supply up is one of the primary things on a mama’s mind – is my baby getting enough milk? Is he or she growing fast enough? It can be anxiety-provoking for many women I’ve known. There are a few tricks that can help, such as supplements and even medications when needed. I wrote a post on that here. But knowing how to make lactation muffins is a good help too- they’re quick, easy and delicious; and can be made gluten free and sugar free. Ground flax, oats and nutritional yeast are some of the ingredients in the muffins that can give supply a boost.
Breast cancer seems to be out-of-control in terms of prevalence these days. Second only to skin cancer in prevalence, approximately one in eight women will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime (statistics from the American Cancer Society). It’s so important to understand the balance of estrogen and progesterone and their impact on breast cancer.
So we took our first steps in IVF therapy, meaning, we actually did our first round. Sadly, it won’t be our only round as we were not successful, but I thought I would share about the experience since I wasn’t really sure what to expect, and I think knowing a few things ahead of time would have helped me.
I think IVF is wondrous, it’s amazing, and it’s clearly brought millions of babies to families that might not have been able to have them otherwise. But I have to say, it’s not easy.
Hi and Happy Fertile Friday!! So we did it, we decided to go ahead and do IVF! All the smaller steps we were taking to try to create a baby – such as IUI and mini-IVF – simply haven’t worked. So I’m putting on my big girl panties and taking the plunge. It’s really scary, getting even more emotionally invested, spending thousands and thousands of dollars, putting my body through a hormonal roller coaster, with no guarantee of a positive outcome. But this is our best chance so we’re going for it! In amongst the excitement and sense of new hope, there are some ethical decisions in IVF that can be challenging, and we’re navigating all of that too.
I have always been interested in hearing people’s perspectives about various moral and ethical elements of IVF. And when I say interested, I mean non-judgementally, open-mindedly, genuinely interested. Far be it for me to know what’s best for other people, but now we’re in this situation ourselves, we’ve had to think long and hard about a few things. [Read more…]
Happy Fertile Friday!! This week we have a guest post, written by Phil Druce, the founder of Ovulation Calculator. Ovulation Calculator is a site that provides tools and education to help couples conceive naturally. He writes today on “Why Does Ovulation Hurt?” He explains what Mittleshmerz is (mittle-what?!) and why it could be significant when trying to conceive.
Happy Fertile Friday!! A couple of weeks ago I wrote a post about histamines and the impact of having too much histamine on our health. In doing that research, I came across a website called The Low Histamine Chef, and a blog post that the author of that site had written on histamines, endometriosis and infertility. [Read more…]
